A good marionette head is charcterized by clear lines and surfaces that allow a play of light and shadow
The head and hands are the main means of expression for a marionette. It is skilful design of the head - in conjunction with movement, light and shade - that generates the facial expressions. The design of the hands contributes hugely to the character of the figure. A well-designed hand brings the play to life.
The task of the marionette maker is to give the figure as broad a range of expression and movement as posssible. If wellmade, it can equally well express such opposing feelings as joy and sorrow.
